about

A new tuk-tuk interior sound library from Thailand is up and this one is a really special one! We hired an awesome driver to take us on a ride at night through Chiang Mai, Thailand for one hour!

That gave us enough time to record many different sound effects throughout the journey. For me was important to record inside a original and older tuk tuk and you will hear what I mean. The metal is rattling, the propane gas with the sweet smell, big exhaust and squeaky brakes makes a huge difference to this soundscape.

THE JOURNEY

We started in the old town and made our way through small streets. You will hear the engine start and the cute honking. We drove around the Chiang Mai ring. Lots of traffic and traffic jams near the market made the journey slow at the beginning with a low gear.

On our way to the train station, we still had quite the traffic and driving over each curb and potholes made it to a real sound experience.

We finally went on the highway and that is when we maxed out the speed of the tuk-tuk. Going with almost 100 km/h per hour over the asphalt seems a little scary but it was fun at the same as long nothing happens.

We left the highway direction Maya Mall and came back to the ring where we drovee a few extra rounds through the small streets with a slow and fast tempo.

THE EQUIPMENT

I knew the best way to record these sounds is with the DPA 4060. I place them with BluTac left and right between the driver seat to get a nice soundscape.
For more depth, I also used the AKG C411 contact microphone and placed it on several metallic objects. The sound effects are separate in this library and you can decide if you like to use them for sound design or anything else. These sounds are super awesome.

I used the Deity S Mic 2S to get the sound of the exhaust from behind. I hold it as close as possible to get the sound that way.

CONCLUSION

This is a great sound library and we had so much fun recording it! Because of the diversity between slow and extremely fast, the bumps, potholes, acceleration, and shifting gears this library is perfect for any kind of production if a tuk-tuk or unique engines are needed.
