Welcome to the nocturnal side of Chiang Mai. I arrived at the market near midnight, when tourists were gone and most side shops had closed. Yet, the hustle didn't cease; people were still working and prepping for the next day.

I navigated the dim alleys on my motorcycle and parked close to several drains, capturing the first sounds. Motorbikes and trucks passed by, while people behind rusty gates watched TV.

During my recording session, rats scurried past, and the street's ambiance reminded me of "Big Trouble in Little China" starring Kurt Russell.

Next, I connected the DPA 4060 to my Zoom H6 recorder and approached the main market. Motorcycles frequently whizzed past, likely freelancers shuttling products from trucks to stalls and vice versa.

I continued past a dark alley to a 24-hour store where a man swept the street, creating a pleasant sound. An old AC hummed in the background, accompanied by a cicada's song.

Entering another busy alley, I encountered a woman watching TV and listening to music. Soon after, I spotted two men unloading goods from a pickup truck.

Near the main road, close to the river, I found a woman unpacking small plastic bags. I recorded her movements as people conversed nearby. Further along, a pickup truck started its engine, and motorbikes leisurely cruised by.

Retracing my steps, I passed the TV-watching woman and stopped at a butcher shop. The most intriguing sounds came from here: water splashed as floors and metal plates were cleaned, a metal bowl clanged, and ice was crushed.

As I wrapped up my recordings, I strolled along the market street, passing the waiting motorcyclists and listening to cicadas' songs.

Chiang Mai is home to numerous captivating markets, so don't forget your gear if you ever visit.
